In 2005 the gallery was chosen as one of Niche Magazines top 100 galleries of American craft in the United States, and each year since has been nominated as a finalist. Situated along the Sugar River in the rural village of Paoli WI, the gallery resides in a historic 1920's Creamery and has become an anchor business attracting other small business with an inclination to the arts. Beginning as a furniture showroom with just a handful of crafts, the interest of local artists and customers convinced Eileen Berkley to begin the Artisan Gallery. The gallery premiered in 1987 with 30 local artists and expanded as renovation on the building progressed. The gallery now encompasses over 5,000 square feet of display space including the old creamery "cooler" which has become a special exhibition space.
Eileen's one time furniture making husband, Steve, became a chef in 1996. Closing his wood shop for good to start the Creamery café, it has become a popular dining destination; known for its patio overlooking the Sugar River. In 1998 Theresa Abel was hired as the Art Director and as an artist herself helped continue the growth of the gallery, both in quality and in reputation. In 2004 Eileen and Steve retired to California, selling the gallery to Ms. Abel and her partner Timothy O'Neill. Timothy is a nationally known studio furniture maker who now has his shop in the building and the circle has become complete.
